How should I start? I think my title has it quite right. This drama has been a little tiring – with all the angst, slightly slow pace, bizarre characters and loads of twists & turns – it has been a long journey…
*Warning: There may be spoilers ahead!!*
Story 6
I approached the drama thinking it was going to be a typical Cinderella story – well wasn’t that how it was marketed? It was meant to be some tragic girl who meets her destined partner.
Reality was that the Cinderella story was only about 20% of the whole deal. The rest was made up of suspense, thriller and mystery. Amongst that, please remember to throw in the coma state fiancee who looks evil and eventually turns into a human snake that moves around at night! LOL Here are pictures to prove it! AHAHA
Ok, need to be a bit more serious. To sum it up, we have Maki who plays a girl that is burdened with the discrimination of a brother that is in gaol with the mark that he has killed their parents. We are told in this drama, that despite the developed society of Japan, people still hold much stigma to those whose life have been tainted by some crime. This angle of the story really drove me insane. However, Kanon does not give up and lives her life to the fullest, finding enjoyment and satisfaction in the littlest of things.
Just when we think things have turned around for poor Kanon – she meets Junya and falls in love – more tragedy is revealed. To make matters worse, there’s a nosy reporter on the side and a jealous woman. Great!
BUT don’t worry! Remember? It’s meant to be a Cinderella story! So although they’ve added some twists and suspense (kind of reminds me of an old Jdrama ‘A Sleeping Forest‘), they at least give us a happy ending, albeit it was somewhat formulaic.
Btw, I thought the opening sequence of the drama was SOOOOO much more impressive and romantic than the drama itself. Kind of disappointing…*sigh* I would have preferred a run of the mill pure romance drama instead. haha Haven’t seen one of those in a while!
Characters 5
The pairing between Kitigawa and Maki felt fresh but like what some others said, there seemed to be a missing spark, at least at the start. This may have been Kitigawa’s acting. Given this was his first lead role, he didn’t do a bad job but I could feel that he had to warm up to his character. I initially found him a bit stiff and ‘over-smiled’ a tad but he gradually grew more natural near the end. However, I think there was an inherent problem with his character. Thinking back, I couldn’t really remember something particularly memorable about Junya. He was just a really nice guy. Maybe if it was someone more experienced in acting, Junya’s wholehearted love for Kiyoka would have come across more strongly.
On the otherhand, Maki being much more experienced handled her emotional scenes well. There were moments where I was basically crying with her! I must admit that the melancholic instrumental/piano versions of Eternally probably didn’t exactly help either! LOL
Music 7
One of the highlights to this drama is the music. I LOVED the piano version of Eternally! The choice of the theme song and use of music was moving and suited the ambience of the drama. The only thing that probably annoyed me was the continuous playback of the hymn! The lyrics are quite nice but I am not a big fan of the tune.
This following segment was one of my favourite parts and the piano version of Eternally was a perfect backdrop! My focus here was on Maki…(sorry about the audio being out of sync with the video – it ALWAYS happens when I edit the file. Drives me INSANE!!)
In the drama, they used an instrumental version of Eternally but that version is not on the soundtrack!! Now what the heck is the meaning of that? It’s such an amazing piece!! Episode 4 is the first time it is used…does anyone know where I can find this??
Also, earlier on, tired (a friendly visitor) had queried whether anyone knows where they can get hold of the rock piece that they played at the beginning of episode 4. Given it was a straight instrumental piece, it makes it even more difficult. I went through the OST and found one track that shares a similar sound. It’s not the real deal but I hope it helps. If anyone knows, please tell us!! Thanks in advance!
Overall 6
This drama was generally a disappointment but only really because of the big fuss that people made about it e.g. Maki, Utada Hikaru’s theme song, getsu 9 drama, ‘Cinderella’ story and last of all – backed by the team of Last Friends! With all that on the table, it was a tough task. Objectively speaking, this is a drama still worthy of watching but probably not to everyone’s taste. Although I’m giving this only a 6, I’m sure some people loved it to bits!!

hi, what do you mean by the drama getting backed by the team of Last Friends? From the same production team?

The director, producer and scriptwriter of Innocent Love is the same as that of Last Friends. Last Friends is better though.

it’s definitely not as good as but if you don’t mind some extremity in the storyline followed by some angst, then check it out! The music is not bad! But I’m sure there’s something better out there worth watching first… *sigh*

hahah ic ic. i got sucked in last friend’s music too. and i bought the ost when i was in tokyo. (esp. love the piano/instrumental version of PoL) thx to ur reocmmendation, i am watching triangle. (though a bit dissapointed now that the murder mystery case has become more of a deception case but i hope the actual murder story is really good) and cant wait for the new eita show, Voice?

it’s me again! i laughed out loud at your comment about Kiyoka being a human snake. hahaha!
I still haven’t finished watching this drama because the hardsubbed ver. is only till ep. 5. I’m waiting patiently for it though because i know the subbers are busy as well.
Btw, because you keep on mentioning Last Friends, I am planning to watch it during vacation. =D

Don’t worry hh!! You’re not the only sucker for OSTs – I’m a huge fan of instrumentals and the like – and it’s worsened when I hear the music in a drama that I’m crazy about! LOL It’s still too early to tell whether Triangle will turn out good or bad but I’m definitely following it! Voice sounds good too but a little ordinary in terms of storyline.
OMG hanneebuff!! You have to watch Last Friends though it’s not necessary to everyone’s taste (*WARNING*) It’s going to be a whole lot of drama and angst too so get a cushion ready for you to squeeze the death out of!! hahaha But if you can survive Innocent Love then I’m sure you can deal with Last Friends! Let me know what you think!!

Aida
LoL once again I loved how u wrote about Kiyoka being a devil fiancee and human snake….
Last Friends huh?? I’m also a fan of Jury but I chose not to watch that particular drama as u said because of its over tragic/angst storyline…. Well may be some other time when I have nothing to watch I’ll get back at this.
Oh and I disagree with you in one thing, and that’s about romace in this drama…. I think it had enough share of romance…. Well I’m not really a fan of Romantic type and I personally don’t believe in love and such (don’t laugh at me since I’ve already reached 17 and I still am like this…LoL)
Once again thanks for the review and I really enjoyed reading them from your point of view. See u again some times. Oh and if u have any recommendation please do tell me.

Hey Aida! I so did not like Kiyoka’s character! I feel sorry for the girl that had to play the role. As for Last Friends, definitely a lot of angst but it’s not really tragic. Definitely worth checking out but it’s not light hearted.
Funny you mentioned about not believing in love. I think that kind of goes the same for me but BECAUSE of that, I like watching romantic stories in dramas/movies where things can be more dramatic than it is in reality. *shrug* hahaha Talk about strange!
So what kind of dramas do you like?? I love recommending!! ^____^

I love detective/mystery genre…. I love watching these kinda dramas. In fact I wanna be a detective in future myself.
Well yeah you’re right too. Sometimes I watch romantic stuff for fun and when you don’t really believe in love you enjoy the drama more.
If you want to watch romance, you should watch Korean dramas. Even in their detective/mystery stories there is always some romance going on.
I also like scary ones…. Though I’ve never seen anything that could scare me…. LoL…. Sometimes when my friends/family say I’m no human I try to scream a couple of times just in case LoL….
Talk about strange let me tell you an other weird thing about myself….. Whenever there is tradegy or some kinda sad/misfortune things going on, and u expect everybody to cry I’d rather laugh LoL…. Even in Innocent Love the parts that even u said you were kinda sad, I was in fact laughing. I know I’m weird don’t worry about me.

I love to watch detective/mystery ones. In fact I wanna be a detective in future myself. Solving mysteries is my most favorite activity.
Well yeah you’re kinda right. I do watch romantic dramas as well. Specially since when you don’t really believe in love, watching them is more fun and enjoyable.
You should watch Korean dramas more often. Even if the genre is not romance, there’s always some kinda romance going on.
I love scary drama/movie/anime as well. Though I’ve never seen any that could scare me…. LoL sometimes because of my family/friends I have to scream so they don’t say I’m no human….
Strage huh?? Well may be I should tell u another weird thing about me…. When in the drama/movie there’s a sad/misfortune thing going on, rather than crying I’d laught. Even in Innocent Love when you said you were touched a couple of times, I was laughing so much that my mother came to see what kinda comedy I’m watching LoL…. Now really STRANGE isn’t it?? ^_^

LOL Aida – I’m assuming you submitted your comment twice! Detective/mystery?! Oooh! I like those too but I watch less of those now cos they require more concentration etc. These days, I prefer fluff. I think it’s what tends to happen when you start working. *sigh* Likewise, I used to watch Korean dramas too (some memorable ones were Winter Sonata, Kim Sam Soon, Full House) but not anymore as they’re too long and slow. I prefer J-dramas cos they’re shorter, more interesting storylines (characters don’t just have cancer when they’re in their 20s, have a car crash, lose their memory and sometime in between finds out that they’ve fallen in love with their long lost brother/sister!!) and they pay a lot of attention to the music used. I’m a big fan of OSTs.
As for scary stuff, my family is a huge fan of horror movies. I swear our DVD collection has 80% of horror movies made in Asia!! LOL I’m ok with scary movies but will not make my way to go and watch them. I don’t handle gore very well. I was very disturbed by the last gory anime that I watched – Mnemosyne. But YOU SERIOUSLY CRACKED me up when I saw “my mother came to see what kinda comedy I’m watching”!!! HAHAHA Now THAT doesn’t happen to me! hahaha So when you actually watch comedy, do you laugh?!
I’ve started watching the new J-drama Triangle – it’s mystery/suspense. I’ve only watched episode 1 and it’s looking good. I’ll let you know if it gets REALLy good!

aida
Sorry about that…. I thought it wasn’t submitted….
Triangle huh?? Yeah please let me know. I’m waiting for all the episodes to come out. I just got tired of waiting for every single drama to be completed or at least have a new episode……
Well of course when it’s comedy I laugh…. But well when u’re in the mood yourself you’ll understand what I’m saying…. U know, all these misfortune and upseting things are going on, and u know it’s a drama, and u’d just think “Ahhhhhh…. Their acting is good” and u predict what’s gonna happen next (like as u said in Korean dramas u would expect an illness or wrong love or the poor girl meets the prince and that kinda stuff)…. And finally when that happens u suddenly laugh….LoL…. Try it and u’ll see what i’m saying…
By the way have u watched “Celeb to Binbo Taro”??!!!! It’s quite good. Funny and romantic….
And one last question: since u watched Innocent Love by yourself too, I’m assuming you understand Japanese at least better than me…. So if u do can u please help me translate a song?? I understand it more or less but I just want to have an expert to tell me again, so I can be sure…. It’s quite good/meaningful song…

No worries. I agree waiting is an absolute pain! Btw, I agree with the whole laughing at tragic scenes. It all comes down to your mood. It can get so dramatized that it just becomes funny!
Ooooh!! Celeb to Binbo Taro?! I want to watch that! I just haven’t had time! Thanks – will definitely put that down on my ‘to watch’ list.
*sigh* I’m afraid you’re wrong. I watched Innocent Love with chinese subs! I can read about 90% of it. My actual understanding of Japanese is actually quite crap! I’ve seen the English lyrics somewhere. If I find it I’ll let you know. Or if you’re interested, I can get hold of the Chinese lyrics (I find that this tends to be more accurate) then translate it into English. I’ll get back to you. I remember that the lyrics are very good.

Oh I wasn’t talking about the lyrics of this drama…. You can find “Eternally” with English sub at youtube…. It’s another song from Celeb to Binbo Taro… Not the ending but the insert theme…..
Another choice for u might be “Anna-san no Omame”…. It wasn’t really perfect but it was okay and I laughed quite a lot…..
It’s good that u understand Chinese…. I tried to learn, but Japanese is my priority right now.

Sorry! My mistake! Do you mean the song Hero by Safarii? I can help if you wish. I can try and track down a chinese translation and change that to English. My Japanese really sucks…

Yup you got it right…. It’s that song….. For some reason it has occupied my mind and I can’t help but listening to it and wishing I had the lyrics… As I mentioned before I quite understand Japanese but again for some reason I can’t understand this song LoL….
I really appreciate it if you help me…. Thanks *Bow my head*

Hi Sleepy,
I watched Innocent Love hoping it’d be something like Last Friends, but it was kinda dissappointing…. :( i totally agree with your comments above. Would you happen to have any recommendations for jdramas similar to Last Friends? I usually like to watch funny jdramas, but these days, i’m in the mood for something melodramatic ;p Thanks!

Argh! stella! That’s a tough request!! Last Friends is pretty unique and hard to find something similar. Or beat really!! LOL Hmm…something melodramatic? The one that stands out in my mind is Midnight Sun Walk also known as Byakuyakou. It stars Ayase Haruka and Yamada Takayuki. Both very experienced actors. Definitely not lighthearted but a worthwhile watch. It won a couple awards when it was released in 2006. Let me know what you think!! Hope you enjoy it! I’m usually a more light hearted comedy person.

hi sleepy,
thanks for the recommendation!!! I just started watching the 1st episode of Byakuyakou and i like it. It kind of reminds me of an old jdrama with kimura takuya called “One Million Stars Falling from the Sky” (Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi). have you seen this drama?

does anyone know the piano piece that junya would always play? at the church and the kids would sing to it and the one that was playing in the music boxes they gave to each other?
