I’ve been meaning to summarise what is catching my eye in the coming season but spare time has been hard to find lately!! Luckily both Yuri no Boke and hashihime has both summarised what’s coming this season. I’ll simply highlight those that I will be checking out. I might not be entirely accurate on the plot summaries…just a warning…The following is broadly in the order of the most appealing first…
Episode 1 on 13 January
Story: Shuicihi Nitori appears to be a shy and quiet preteen boy, when he transfers to a new school he quickly makes friends with the tomboyish Yoshino Takatsuki who sits next to him. It soon becomes apparent that both Shucihi and Yoshino are more than simply a sensitive boy and masculine girl, they both are transgendered. Together they decide to take the first steps toward becoming the people they want to be (taken from ANN).
Reasons for watching: There are a number of reasons to watch this one!! Firstly, the mangaka is the one from Aoi Hana, Takako Shimura!! There’s no yuri but the anime focuses on some transgender issues!? Sounds interesting!! Plus if you go to the website and check out their trailer, the art is soft and endearing with a very classical music OST. I love the use of strings!! How can you NOT watch it!?!? Seiyuu wise, it’s also quite attractive with Aki Toyosaki (Yui from K-ON!), Nana Mizuki (Fate from Magical Girl Lyrical), Saeko Chiba (Natsuki from Mai-Hime), Yoshino Nanjou (Maria from Canaan), Yui Horie (need I say more!?) but they seem to all just play supportive roles. The main two characters are played by new voice actors, I think?
Episode 1 on 13 January
Story: The story takes place in an island, where a “Fractale System” is beginning to collapse. One day, Crane finds an injured girl called Phryne under a cliff. She disappears leaving a pendant. Crane sets out for a journey with the girl-shaped avatar Nessa to look for Phryne and discovers the secret of the Fractale System (taken from ANN).
Reasons for watching: Story and art. I took a quick look at the website and the art is pretty. Character designs are ok – not a huge fan of the red heads at first glance bu you never know… Reminds me of Sora no Woto? You guys agree? On the seiyuu front, there’s Yuu Kobayashi (Rio in Sora no Woto) and Kana Hanazawa (Susukihotaru in Youkai Otome Zakuro and Tsukimi in Kuragehime in the last season’s animes).
Episode 1 on 6 January
Story: The anime is set in a world where these mecha machines, called Infinite Stratos, can only be operated by women. There are a few rare exceptions and one is Ichika Orimura. With this ability he is given a scholarship to enter a school specialised in training IS pilots…i.e. a single guy in a girls school…(taken from ANN).
Reasons for watching: The seiyuu!!! Youko Hikasa (Mio from K-ON!) is the lead along and supporting acts by Kana Hanazawa (Susukihotaru in Youkai Otome Zakuro) and Marina Inoue (Natsuru from Kampfer and Rei from HOTD) and Megumi Toyoguchi (Sei from Marimite!!!)!! Story is a bit “meh” but I’ll give this a go at least. I do kind of like the character designs…
Episode 1 on 7 January
Story: GOSICK takes place in 1924 in a small, made-up European country of Sauville. The story centers on Kazuya Kujo, the third son of a Japanese Imperial soldier, who is a transfer student to St. Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. There he meets Victorique, a mysterious yet beautiful and brilliant girl who never comes to class and spends her days reading the entire content of the library or solving mysteries that even detectives can’t solve (ANN).
Reasons for watching: The plot sounds interesting but then I have a soft spot for mysteries ^^. There’s also Aoi Yuuki and Miyuki Sawashiro who played Canaan’s voice!!!!
Episode 1 on 8 January
Story: The anime is set at a time of war and there is an academy which trains female warriors. These warriors are partnered with a guy and enters into battles together. Aoi (a guy) enrolls into this school and becomes the male partner to the most powerful female warrior, also known as, Pandoras.
Reasons for watching: Seiyuu (Mamiko Noto and more!!!) The story sounds like it’s been done before and action + ecchi (so well endowed ladies is the norm here…) isn’t quite my thing (I think of Queen’s Blade!!! O_O) but throw in Mamiko Noto then that completely changes the situation. There is also Kana Ueda (Yumi in Marimite, Saki from Saki), Ami Koshimizu (Nina from Mai Otome and Nodoka from Saki). YAY!! I have not seen an anime with these guys in a LONG while!!!
Have I missed any other “must sees”? Let me know if I have!!
