Status: Still running
Genre: yuri, shoujo-ai, high school
Published: 2007 by Morinaga Milk
Impression so far: Nice art and character designs, very cute and a truckload of ‘blush’ moments – I like!! ^_^
Okazu’s words: “blushy-cheeked sweetness, service and Yuri”, “Mari who is quite gay. Akko *might* be, but Mari? Definitely.” (see review)
Where available: MakiMaki Scanlations
What a cute picture! ^_^ Btw, I picked this manga up cos someone mentioned it as a worthy check for yuri fans out there! Also, I recall that Tessa had highly recommended works of Milk Morinaga. Quiras also recommended another work of Milk Morinaga called Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo – which I will check out later!! Thanks guys!
I actually don’t usually read manga – the only one I’ve read from beginning to end is Shoujo Sect! *GASP* hahaha Yes I did read it after seeing the anime! *SECOND GASP* I’m not a big fan of reading manga as I seem to have some inability of comprehending which direction I read the squares and dialogue! LOL Yes – I’m pretty hopeless. BUT, after some training with Shoujo Sect and now Girl Friends – I’m better. You must be thinking – “About time! You probably should also get your head checked!!” hahaha
Sorry – now back to Girl Friends. This is a running yuri anime that centres on two girls (now that’s not very surprising) in a highschool setting (yes – they’ve used this formula a number of times…) Although the key themes are nothing new, I’m still more than happy to give it a go – anyone disagree? haha
So Mari-chan is a new student to the school – she has long dark hair and is the quiet type who likes to read and has good grades. On the otherhand, there’s Akko-chan who’s blonde, a bit ditzy and crazy and you guessed right! Academics? hahaha Let’s just say that she has other priorities in life – like eating at Mister Donut, shopping and taking sticker photos! LOL Anyway, they become good friends thanks to Akko-chan’s proactiveness and all is merry until suddenly Mari-chan seems to show signs of ‘yuri’. This was a surprise to me as I was expecting Akko-chan to make the first move. Well no complaints from me! LOL
Now let me grab your attention with a cheeky screen shot from one of the pages… =P
Now surely you’re gonna have to check this one out!! haha As long as you don’t object the idea about high school girls and you want to read some light yuri – then I don’t think you can go wrong with this one!! haha I hope it gets better…!!
I might post some of my favourite scenes so far in a separate post…=P

Yes I agree whole heartedly. I was about to recommend to you but was not sure where to post, after remembering reading you were looking for similar material in the Shoujo Sect topic.

I’m so excited by this finding! I finished all 17 chapters and loved the last few. I actually thought it was quite moving and really enjoyed reading Akko’s response to Mari’s kiss. I thought it was believable and appreciated the attention Morinaga’s attention to the character’s emotions and development. I’m basically HOOKED!! HAHAHA Kuchibiru is definitely next on the list!!

A bit slow though But hopefully that means it will be very long and sweet. If it makes it past volume 3 I’ll get the book itself if only to support the author.
Go Morinaga-san~

Yay, See? I told you Morinaga Milk was awesome! My favorite of her work is still the 4 one shots about Nana and Hitomi. Soo, if you read Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo, you need to read the short “even if we’re not friends” first because the second chapter of Nana and Hitomi is in Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo.

Yeah I loved it too. Tessa you have good tastes my friend. That was sweet. and don’t forget to read Chocolate kiss kiss and Wishing on the Moon which are also part of the Nana & Hitomi story arc.
@Tessa have you read strawberry sweet shake too?

It was definitely a tad slow in the first – say 10 chapters? I kind of dazed out when they talked about the other friends and the goukons etc but otherwise starting around chapter 10, things really started to get interesting! As I mentioned before, I liked the small twist of Mari actually showing signs of ‘more than just friends’ first. It’s also the realism of it that drew me in. I was just planning to buy the Japanese manga when I realised that Taiwan has released volume 1 in Chinese!! Although I much prefer English, Chinese is still better than Japanese where I don’t understand a thing! It’s coming to me shortly!!! Can’t WAIT!! ^______^

Akira
*excitedly frustrated* I can’t wait for the new update!! (Chapter 20) After all, we’ve all had such interestingly frustrating cliff-hangers! Then, it becomes all mellow again…. I NEED SOME ACTION!!! XD, well, I’ll just wait *quite* patiently… for now.

Akira! You’re not the only one!! It’s like my daily routine (actually an every couple of hrs more like it) to check these two sites that hold manga raws for chapter 20!!! Why is it not up yet!?!? Last time it was up ONE day after it was publicly released and Maki Maki scanlated it in like 1 or 2 days?!?!? It’s been almost THREE whole days now!! hahaha

Wow – the first negative comment here. Well people have their options as to what they like. As long as it’s not affecting others then I don’t see a problem. Some people can hate something, others can love it. Simple.

A couple I’ve kept op with are Choir! and Kanamemo. Both are decent, but Girlfriends is by far the best manta I’ve read. And not just in the Shoujo-ai genre, just by far the best.
